Rooted - Graduation Project
Publication, Branding and Packaging
January 2024 - May 2024
This project explores the connection between nature, design principles, and human well-being. This project is rooted in biomimicry that imitates natural forms into design, and biophilia which is the human tendency to interact with forms that occur in nature.
Our fast-paced lives often blind us to the design inspiration brimming in nature, from the intricate patterns on fruits and vegetables to the calming presence of trees and flowers. With our lives being confined in the four walls of our home and workspace, we tend to overlook the wonders that nature has to offer. This ignorance instigates an implicit desire in individuals to explore and find solace in nature's aesthetic forms, from luscious green landscapes to blue skies shrouded with pearl hued clouds. The project outcome is for art enthusiasts, nature lovers and anyone seeking creative rejuvenation or inspiration through nature. The project began with researching the influence of nature on design principles, focusing on nature's simplicity–its symmetry, patterns and geometric influences, and nature's symbiotic relationship with humans. Along with analysing existing nature-inspired designs to identify key elements and strategies, and conducting user research to understand audience preferences for nature-based design activities.

Throughout the project, I have engaged in a multidimensional exploration of how nature inspires design. Following these stages of exploration and research, I have ideated and arrived at the direction of the project. Gathering valuable feedback and insights from focus group activities like cyanotype printing and vegetable printing, this allowed for an in depth analysis of participants' responses, and how they felt while performing the activities. These activities have refined the project's approach.

Work Space during the project
A DIY toolkit and a Photobook is developed as a final outcome. Includes engaging activities like Vegetable Printing, Botanical Press Pasting, and Cyanotype Printing. The Tool Kit provides all the equipment to perform the activities, the book gives instructions on how the 3 activities can be executed along with a documentation of visual stories about those who appreciate the beauty of nature, participated in these activities and with an objective of making this appreciation contagious. It will help participants discover their inner creative selves through interactions with botanical objects and design principles.
